Platte City is a growing community with a residential population approaching 5,000 expected to double over the next ten years. The City is located in the Kansas City metropolitan area, 7 miles north of KCI Airport on I-29. Platte City is the county seat for Platte County and the home of the Platte County R3 School District.

City is seeking a director with the interest and capacity to take a strong, technically competent Public Works Department to the next level through continued skill development, long term work/project planning and a transition to more effective use of equipment, information and technology. Opportunities and challenges include planning and leading the next long term infrastructure cycle; succession planning/staff development; and improving infrastructure GIS and data systems.

Public Works Department is in transition from traditional service response operations to more data driven work planning and implementation model. New director will inherit high quality infrastructure as the City has completed a 25 year effort to reconstruct all streets to current standards; upgrade water and wastewater systems and improve traffic flow with completion of a second east-west arterial.  

The Public Works Department is responsible for planning and operating street maintenance, water distribution, wastewater (collection & treatment), solid waste and recycling collection, stormwater management, contract cemetery/facility maintenance and capital projects.

Department staff consists of four foreman, five maintenance workers and seasonal/part time staff. Public Works staff is highly experienced with extensive functional area knowledge and qualifications. Finance, budget, purchasing and administrative support is provided by City wide administrative staff.

Ideal applicant will possess a proven leadership skills, systematic planning ability, and a solid knowledge base in general public works functions. Specific knowledge and experience with water and wastewater utilities is preferred but not required. Applicant should be knowledgeable regarding the use of geographic information to maintain system maintenance/condition data and as basis for future operational and capital planning.

Applications will be evaluated based on demonstrated experience, knowledge and ability that are the best fit for the future direction and needs of the Department. 

The City has no minimum education and professional requirements for this position, however relevant educational attainment and professional development/certifications will be weighed in the applicant review process. Additional review factors are the type and extent of applicant’s relevant knowledge and experience in public works operations, capital project management or utility operations including demonstrated experience in managing, leading or supervising.
