The City of Smithville, MO (population approximately 10,000) is seeking a highly motivated and service-oriented local government professional to fill the role of a newly created Public Works Director position.  Nestled between Interstates 29 and 35 and just north of Interstate 435, Smithville is an upper-middle class suburb of Kansas City that offers easy access to Kansas City’s amenities while maintaining its own unique flavor for recreation, health and wellness.  Located adjacent to Smithville Lake, recreation and outdoor amenities abound.  The city has an annual budget of almost $10 million and 60 FTE. The City is currently updating its citizen-driven strategic plan and vision to identify community priorities for the near future.

The Public Works Director will serve as a key support to the City Administrator and join the senior leadership team in implementing the direction of the Mayor and Board of Aldermen.  The Public Works Director serves as the director of the department with highly responsible managerial and supervisory work in planning, organizing and directing all activities in the Public Works Department. Responsibilities of the director include operation and maintenance of the City’s infrastructure system including streets, storm sewers, public buildings, equipment, street lighting, traffic control systems, water and wastewater utilities, and other infrastructure elements. Duties also include floodplain administration, grant writing, budget preparation and management, community relations, and planning and managing capital improvement projects.

Minimum Qualifications:  Five years progressively responsible and directly related local government experience and education equivalent to a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in engineering, public administration, or a related field.  A master’s degree is highly desirable.
