Under the supervision of the Transportation Manager, this seasonal Intern position serves as a training ground for students with an interest in the Engineering field and local government. The employee performs skilled and semi-skilled engineering activities assigned by the Transportation Manager. This employee should possess good communication, research, analytical, organizational and computer skills.

In general, this position requires a commitment of 35 - 40 hours per week during the summer months, with some flexibility in how these hours are set up depending on the student's other commitments. Pay range for this position will begin at $14.50 per hour.

Clearance Interval Calculation. Measure roadway grade and intersection width. Compute clearance intervals for vehicles and pedestrians in an accurate manner using this information and average roadway speeds.

Traffic Counts. Perform intersection turning movements during AM and PM peak traffic periods. Collect 24-hour ADT vehicle counts using counting equipment in an accurate manner.

Traffic Data Collection and GIS Input. Collect and organize citywide data related to traffic signals, signing, pavement, striping, and lighting. Enter this information into the City of Shawnee's Geographical Information System in an accurate manner. Scan engineering plans and organize electronic files.

Crash Data Summarization. Review crash reports and identify trends and patterns. Organize data and work with the Transportation Manager to develop crash countermeasures. Create reports detailing crash research.

Other Duties. Support other departments and perform other duties, as deemed necessary or assigned.
