The City of Shawnee is looking for an Engineering Inspector, a position in our career development program that includes the Engineering Inspector I, II, and III levels.  This is a technical position responsible for non-professional engineering work. Responsibilities include inspection and construction management of infrastructure improvements overseen by the Community Development department.  The position ensures projects comply with City construction standards and specifications. The Development Engineer provides supervision and guidance, but work is frequently performed independently with latitude for decision-making within the guidelines of current policies and procedures. The position includes frequent internal contacts within the work unit, and direct external interaction with the public, developers, contractors, design professionals, and other agencies.  The hiring range for this position is $43,960 - $49,000 annually (DOQ).

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Inspections. Performs field inspections of public and private infrastructure including streets, parking lots and storm systems to ensure compliance with City construction standards and specifications. Performs inspection of commercial and industrial building site work, as well as residential subdivisions.  Completes elevation surveys utilizing laser level. 

Quality Control Testing of Construction Materials. Completes and coordinates field testing of concrete, asphalt, and soils for compliance with construction standards.

Project Records. Maintains a daily log or diary of construction activities. Responsible for taking digital photographs detailing construction progress and organizing these photos to ensure accurate record-keeping.  

Project Monitoring.  Prepares and maintains a record of completed projects and provides the status of ongoing projects.

Community Interaction. Addresses questions and concerns from the public regarding Community Development projects and construction activity.  Investigates and answers citizen complaints and requests, writes work orders for repairs, and submits recommendations for solutions.

Emergency Operations.  Participates in snow removal, ice control  and other emergency operations during off-duty times and during regular work hours.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or the equivalent
  • Additional course work in construction or civil engineering technology preferred
  • A minimum of four (4) years experience in non-professional construction inspection, engineering or surveying
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B with air brakes and tanker vehicle endorsement required or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment
  • Ability to understand and perform word processing applications, databases, spreadsheets, and/or other specialized software
  • Ability to understand and perform standard mathematical computations

Additionally the successful candidate will either possess or have the ability to complete the following within one (1) year of hire:

  • Kansas Department of Transportation Certified Inspection and Testing Training Program
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI) certification requirements for concrete field testing
  • A minimum of eight (8) hours of specialized training in erosion and sediment control

Or any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the responsibilities listed above.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:

This position generally works 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (excluding holidays). This position may be required to respond and participate in snow removal and ice control operations during off-duty times when necessary to mitigate the emergency. Emergency response shifts begin upon call-in and can occur anytime, day or night, seven days per week INCLUDING HOLIDAYS. Typical emergency shifts are twelve hours on and a minimum of eight hours off between shifts. This position may be required to work overtime to accommodate contractors' work schedules.
