Applying Forecasts to Road Maintenance Chall ....

Description :

Planning for the right storm saves lives and budgets. Determining what weather data should be incorporated into your operational decisions and which should be ignored is a skill worth refreshing before the snow falls.

Join Sara Croke and Sullivan Brown of Weather or Not and Jon Tarleton of Tarleton Consulting for a virtual Lunch ‘n Learn.  Some of the topics we’ll discuss:

  • - Best practices for incorporating pavement temperature forecasts into snow and ice management plans
  • - Matching weather data and forecasts to operational decisions
  • - Getting the most useful answers from conversations with your meteorologist
  • - Selecting your go-to weather resources to prevent information overload and analysis paralysis
  • - The latest Winter 2020-21 forecast for the KC Metro

Please include your email when you register, and a link to the zoom meeting will be sent via email prior to the presentation. Bring your questions or send them ahead of time to sara@weatherornot.com.  Mild weather is the best time to plan for winter.  Let’s do it!

About the Presenters:

35 years ago when Sara Croke transitioned from broadcasting to operational weather consulting for the ’85 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals, it began Weather or Not’s partnership with road crews, utility managers, engineering firms, park and recreation directors, emergency managers and defense contractors.  Combining the science of meteorology with the practicality of building and maintaining roads, bridges and facilities is a skill best perfected by regularly talking with those crews who execute operational weather decisions. Sara’s looking forward to continuing that conversation with APWA KC Metro Chapter during the Virtual Lunch ‘n Learn.

Maximizing lead times to changing weather has been Sullivan “Sully” Brown’s goal since he started at Weather or Not in 2009.  By talking with public works crews around the clock, Sully has learned from them how best to give the right notification to help schedule crews, materials and contractors to optimize event or project management.  Combining his leadership skills with those from his meteorology degree and client experience, Sully worked into his current position of Weather Operations Manager. He’s excited to share tips and tricks with transportation managers at the APWA KC Metro Chapter Lunch ‘n Learn while listening for critical needs that he can bring back to his team of meteorologists before we all tackle Winter 2020.

Jon Tarleton is the owner and a meteorologist with Tarleton Consulting LLC and has spent 25 years in the transportation industry.  Jon spent the first seven years of his career forecasting for Surface Systems’ Road/Runway Weather Information Systems (RWIS) clients across the United States and Canada. Jon assisted in developing the Winter Maintenance Certificate Class with the APWA. Jon has presented to over 20,000 attendees across North America and brings his passion for weather education to each class.
